When should you seek advice about varicose veins in your legs?
A visible vein does not always need treatment. And you do not have to wait until it hurts to ask about it.
It is worth seeking an assessment if you have heaviness, pain, itching or swelling in your legs; if your varicose veins change or worsen; or if you notice changes in your skin, especially around the ankles. A wound that does not heal also needs medical attention.
What if you have no symptoms, but the appearance of your legs bothers you? You can still seek advice. You do not need to invent a medical reason to talk about something that concerns you.
When not to wait for a scheduled appointment
If a varicose vein bleeds, seek urgent medical attention. If you develop sudden pain and swelling, particularly in one leg, seek an urgent assessment. If you also have shortness of breath or chest pain, go to the emergency department immediately.
What happens at the consultation?
First, we will listen to what is happening and what you would like to resolve. Then we will examine your legs. When indicated, a venous duplex ultrasound will help us see how the blood is flowing and whether there is a problem that needs treatment.
The answer may be not to intervene, to treat superficial veins, or to consider options such as endovenous laser ablation in certain cases. The technique is chosen after the diagnosis, never before.
At DLG Minimal Medicine in Palma, you can start with a simple question: “Could you take a look?”
